Microsoft fixes 8018830f error for some using Windows Phone 8.1 Update Preview for Developers
8/7/2014 4:58:27 PM
Microsoft may have finally addressed installation problems with the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 Preview for Developers. The issue initially started when Update 1 for Windows Phone 8.1 Preview began on Monday and a few users downloaded the update, but it would not install. The associated error code is 8018830f, and Microsoft's Joe Belfiore tweeted that they were investigating.
Ever since yesterday, we have received a few tips that those with the previous 8018830f error are now getting Update 1 to their phones. However, within the last hour we have received multiple tips from users who are now being alerted to the update being available, along with a successful installation. The fix may also address those with the even more rare 80188306 error.
Facebook acquires PrivateCore, aims to better secure your data on its servers
8/7/2014 4:00:56 PM
Facebook, the world's biggest social network, is buying online security company PrivateCore for an undisclosed amount of money. It's almost certainly not Instagram or Oculus levels of cash, never mind the tens of billions thrown at Whatsapp, but it will, apparently, help Facebook secure all of the data — the personal, private social data that all of us who use Facebook choose to share with them — on its servers.
Microsoft goes back in time 20 years with recreation of its first website
8/7/2014 3:50:56 PM
20 years ago, the Internet was just starting to become used by more than just scientists and college students. The launch of the World Wide Web for accessing the Internet was a major factor in its growth as a mainstream service. Today, Microsoft turned back the clocks two decades with a recreation of its very first website.
Ubisoft's Hungry Shark Evolution comes to Xbox LIVE on Windows Phone 8
8/7/2014 3:24:29 PM
Just in time for the Discovery Channel's Shark Week is Ubisoft's Hungry Shark Evolution. As a bonus, it is a free Xbox LIVE game to boot. However, if something is free, you know there is a catch, there are either ads or in-app purchases, and this one features the latter. Still, the game looks to be a blast as it has picked up a few awards in the past. Oh, and yes, 512 MB support is there.
As like many things that come to Windows Phone, Hungry Shark Evolution came out nearly a year ago on other platforms. The game though also received a refresh in the last week and Windows Phone is now a part of that, pardon the pun, wave. Let us see what the game entails.
Bing adds download file details, makes searching for technical information better
8/7/2014 3:21:22 PM
Bing, Microsoft's search engine, has made it easier and better to search for technical information like code and application programming interface (API) references. Basically, they're un-burrying it and making the details more glance-able, so you'll have a greater chance of figuring out whether a particular search result is relevant to you before you waste your precious time clicking on it. Bing has also improved non-alphanumeric character support, and even pulled out the most important information about file downloads — like price, reviews, and safety warnings.

8/7/2014 2:33:14 PM
In 2013, the National Football League released the NFL Fantasy Football app for Windows Phone, but we found it to be a disappointment. Today, the league has ditched that old app and relaunched it on the Windows Phone Store.

Xbox One Digital TV Tuner brings live TV service to European customers
8/7/2014 1:40:31 PM
US-based customers have been able to access live TV on their Xbox One by connecting the console to a set-top box, but customers in other regions have not been able to access the feature. Microsoft is now addressing the issue by rolling out a USB-based Xbox One Digital TV Tuner that provides an "over-the-air digital terrestrial TV experience," negating the need to connect a set-top box via an HDMI-In cable.
Masked Shooters, a multi-player online combat game for Windows Phone
8/7/2014 12:58:45 PM
Masked Shooters is a multi-player, online first person shooter for Windows Phones where you can compete in teams or in a free for all format.
The game has a wide range of graphic quality settings to help optimize game play speeds and a modest selection of weapons to use as you try to blast your opponent into the netherworld.
Available for low-memory devices, Masked Shooters has potential but hard to see graphics and cumbersome gaming mechanics hold this Windows Phone game back.
