8/5/2014 7:05:19 PM

If your car has Bluetooth and you have just updated your device to Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1, you need to head over to your car right now and try this out. Update 1 has added a neat little feature that lets you activate Cortana directly from the voice command button on your steering wheel. Such a tool is useful for finding local eateries, gas stations, parking, or just looking up information while driving and avoiding getting a ticket.

How do you set it up? Read along and follow the steps.

Newsly Reader is a beautiful and functional news reader for Windows Phone
8/5/2014 6:15:06 PM

Newsly Reader is a fantastic news reader app for Windows Phone that went under our radar last month. I'm glad that I've discovered it now, and have been using it since a couple of days. Developed by Nemanja Stancic, a Siberian developer, Newsly Reader is a full content news reader and allows you to read from your favorite news sources and RSS feeds in one place sorted in the way you like it.

You can pick from featured sources (bummed that WPCentral is not listed there) or from a variety of categories. You can also search for topics and feeds to find favorite sources or discover new ones.

8/5/2014 5:35:25 PM

Yesterday, the Preview for Developers program began pushing out Update 1 for Windows Phone 8.1 users. The OS refresh brings Live Folders and numerous other improvements that we are detailing in more in-depth articles.

Unfortunately, owners of the HTC 8X and HTC 8S are waiting on the sidelines as their device is currently not eligible. Citing Microsoft Support Forums it appeared to be related to outdated firmware. Microsoft, who have now released an official statement to us, is clarifying that situation a bit.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 lets you set the time without a SIM card
8/5/2014 2:45:27 PM

One of the smaller, but very useful features in Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 is Network Time Protocol (NTP) support. If you run a PC, NTP is nothing new, it is simply the ability for the computer to ping the server and pulldown the time off the internet. (Wikipedia fact: It is one of the oldest internet protocols in use!)

However, Windows Phone did not support this, at least not until Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1.
