Handy Games releases SPS: Football and 1941 Frozen Front, two great free games for Windows Phone
8/27/2014 7:32:26 PM
There are basically two German developers we can count on to make great Windows Phone games: Flare Games (makers of Royal Revolt 2) and Handy Games. The latter entered the scene with Epic Battle Dude and Aces of the Luftwaffe, two fine free to play games.
This year, Handy Games finally has more Windows Phone games in store for us. A short while ago they released 1941: Frozen Front, a serious turn-based strategy game. We interviewed them about it at Casual Connect a while back. Today Handy follows up with SPS: Football, a very pretty and fun 2D soccer/football game. Both games are free, 512 MB RAM-compatible, and a whole lot of fun. Don't miss our impressions and hands-on videos!

Congrats to our Hidden Gems winners who get some new drones, Spheros and Insteon Kits
8/27/2014 6:32:16 PM
A few weeks back, we dived deeper into using Windows or Windows Phone for various connected hardware, including the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0, Sphero 2.0 and Insteon home-automation kits. The articles not only explained what those things are, but how well the work within the growing Microsoft ecosystem.
As part of the Hidden Gems campaign, we were giving away multiple devices per article, with the only rule being to write a comment (and preferably more than just a word). Over the last two weeks, we picked the winners, notified them, and most are already in possession of their new today.

Lumia Cyan updates now available for all of India as Lumia 525, 720, 820 and 920 go wide
8/27/2014 4:51:14 PM
Over the last few days, Microsoft and its carrier partners have been busy pushing out the Lumia Cyan update for various Lumias. Today, we are updating our lists for the Lumia 525, Lumia 720, Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 as those phones have either completed their Cyan updates or have a few remaining carriers as holdouts.
Perhaps the biggest news is that all of India is now complete for the Lumia Cyan update. From the Lumia 520 all the way up to the Lumia 1520, all eleven of the country variant Lumias are now eligible for the 8.1 and new firmware updates. Considering how big a market India is for Windows Phone, this news demonstrates Microsoft's priorities in delivering updates to its users.
When it comes to the Lumia 720, 820 and 920 series, almost all regions and carrier updates are finished, with just a handful of carriers remaining (Tigo in Latin America seems unusually slow in approving).

Xbox One Kinect stand-alone to hit the market October 7 for $149.99 [Update: It's official]
8/27/2014 4:04:19 PM
Update Microsoft has issued the official announcement on the stand alone Kinect sensor for the Xbox One going on sale for $149.99, but with a slight date change to October 7. The company also says it will come with a code to download a free game, the upcoming Dance Central Spotlight from developer Harmonix.
Original story Ever since Microsoft decoupled the Kinect sensor from the Xbox One, the one lingering question was when would they sell it as a stand-alone unit? Offering an Xbox One without the Kinect sensor made financial sense in Microsoft's struggle against Sony, but it does not mean that people may never want to want to buy the Kinect at a later point. Until now though, there was no option to do so.
