Foursquare finally launches Swarm on Windows Phone 8.1
8/13/2014 4:35:25 PM
Swarm, a new check-in service from Foursquare, is coming out today for Windows Phone. Teased a few weeks ago on the Foursquare blog, the app lets you see where you friends are and then to check into those places. Swarm is not exactly replacing Foursquare, which is focusing on 'discovery' going forward, and it too should have a Windows Phone refresh in the near future according to the Foursquare Twitter account.
The big focus for Swarm over its predecessor is social, as features like traditional mayorships and the points system get dropped in exchange for seeing where your friends are for the evening. Now you can be mayor of a location, but only amongst your friends and not the rest of the world. Users will also still get Insights aka knowing how many times they have checked into a location. Finally, stickers. Yes, if you thought junior highschool was over, you would be wrong as Stickers play a significant role in Swarm.
I'll be on TWiT.TV's Windows Weekly this afternoon, so tune in!
8/13/2014 4:03:09 PM
I do not listen to many podcasts due to lack of time, but if there is one I always tune into, it is Windows Weekly with Paul Thurrott, Mary Jo Foley and Leo Laporte. It is the go-to show for all things Microsoft with some of the industry's biggest hitters discussing the latest news.
Paul Thurrott is on vacation this week, so while he is absent I have been graciously asked to fill in for the afternoon. The show is live-streamed on TWiT.tv starting at 2 PM ET (11 AM PT or 18:00 GMT), so make sure you if you do not regularly watch, you do so today!
Just head to TWiT.tv in two hours for the fun!

Tentacles: Enter the Mind launches for Xbox on Windows Phone with a limited release
8/13/2014 3:02:11 PM
Good news and bad news, folks. The good news is Tentacles: Enter the Mind, a game that has been on Windows 8.1 for some time is also on Windows Phone. Even better, the game is an Xbox LIVE title with Leaderboards, Achievements, and Highscore. Because the game is a universal app, you also get one of the first instances of cloud saves and being able to continue your game on multiple devices. All of that is filed under 'awesome'.
The bad news is like the Windows 8.1 game, the Windows Phone variant, for some odd reason is region restricted. If we hazard a guess, Press Play and Microsoft are easing out this game to see how all of those cloud saves and newfangled universal features handle in the real world. In addition, they were also likely waiting for the Phone counterpart to launch to 'go big.'
