Interactive Touch Books for Windows 8 (Hidden Gems)
6/26/2014 9:20:28 PM

Learning to read is one of the best parts about growing up. The books start off simple and get progressively harder the more you learn and the older you get. Reading these days for most adults takes place on digital e-readers like the Amazon Kindle. Young kids are reading more and more on tablets. Interactive Touch Books is an award-winning app on iOS, that recently made its way to the Windows Store.

As part of our Hidden Gems series, we'll be taking a look at this app aimed at helping young children learn to read. It's sure to be a hit among kids and their parents.

Don't forget, that by leaving a constructive comment below you're entered into winning a new phone or tablet in our daily Hidden Gems contest.

RED. is a badass universal game for Phone and Windows 8 that you should try
6/26/2014 9:09:25 PM

I'm a fan of traditional stick shooter + wave games. There's something with anticipating what's coming next, and the classic arcade feel of enemy hordes attacking you that I find satisfying. RED. is a new game from Knife Media in Cape Town, South Africa. It runs for $2.99 with a free trial, but that $2.99 is for both the Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 versions. Buy once, buy everywhere. Shout-out for Windows universal apps!

RED. has some impressive 2D/3D graphics, comic book design and one hell of a sense of humor. Toss in some gratuitous gore, and I'll buy it.

What is your favorite Windows Phone Navigation App?
6/26/2014 8:55:26 PM

A conversation caught my eye over in the Windows Phone Central Forums where WPCentral reader jtsmak asks, "Are there any good Nokia Drive alternatives for Android?"

Jtsmak , for whatever reason, switches back and forth between an Android device and a Windows Phone. Having grown fond of HERE Drive on Windows Phone, jtsmak could pick up the Android version of Here Drive for about $10 but is curious if there are better alternatives.

While several good suggestions have been thrown out in the Forums discussion, it brings to mind a similar question. "What's your favorite Windows Phone navigation app?"

6/26/2014 7:07:21 PM

Technically, Microsoft will open its 100th retail store location on Saturday but that statistic combines the number of the larger main stores with the many smaller kiosk-like specialty setups that the company has opened as well.

Use 'Sleep Study' to learn what drains your battery on the Surface Pro 3
6/26/2014 6:44:11 PM

A few days ago I did a primer on InstantGo aka Connected Standby on the Surface Pro 3 and other Windows tablets. To refresh, InstantGo is a new low-power battery state the lets the system update email, Skype and other Modern apps while the device is in standby mode. But what if you think something is abnormally draining your battery?

Over on the Windows Experience Blog, Kevin Chin introduces readers to a new tool built into Windows 8.1 christened 'Sleep Study.' In short, Sleep Study is a diagnostic tool that reveals in high detail what is draining the battery on your Windows 8.1 devices with InstantGo enabled.

6/26/2014 5:42:35 PM

Telephone and internet-based UK bank, First Direct has just launched an official app for Windows Phone. The bank today published a new app to the store, enabling Windows Phone owners to engage in mobile banking while on the move. Just like the array of banking apps already available for Windows Phone, it's possible to check balances, manage accounts and make payments, but it's actually quite limited in that regard.

6/26/2014 5:31:18 PM

Zappos finally came a few days ago. It was also just yesterday that A&E, History and Lifetime dropped official apps for their channels into the Windows Phone Store.

You know where this is going. It's time to finally welcome Adobe Photoshop Express into the Windows Phone family.
