Surface Pro 3 128 GB ship date pushed back by 10 days for new orders
6/17/2014 2:44:19 PM

The Surface Pro 3 is slated for release later this Friday, but only for the Core i5 versions coming in 128 GB and 256 GB ranges. The more budget friendly Core i3 and wallet-busting Core i7 configurations, however, are not due until the end of August.
Microsoft may be dealing with somewhat high demand though, as the $999 Core i5 version with 128 GB now has a June 30 ship-by date, slipping by 10 days from June 20. The change in shipping appears only to apply to new purchases, and not early pre-orders. Accordingly, if you reserved your Surface Pro 3 128 GB prior to the last 24 hours, your new tablet/laptop hybrid should still be on track for delivery.
Presumably, Microsoft and Best Buy will also have 128 GB version on-hand in stores for immediate purchase.

6/17/2014 1:15:25 PM

Those devices are almost always Android based, but with the recent loosening of restrictions around the Windows Phone hardware requirements and reference design, more manufacturers are supporting Windows Phone. Back in March, Microsoft added nine new hardware partners to its roster, and since that time the number has grown.

Here's what Microsoft's Cortana was almost called before you changed everything
6/17/2014 4:41:14 AM

In hindsight, Microsoft naming its personal voice assistant after the famous AI character from the Halo game series seems like an obvious choice. The decision was not so easy partially due to an individual studio having initial objections and the usual corporate obstacles potentially thwarting its adoption.
But if not Cortana what would Microsoft have called their feature smart engine for Windows Phone?

The 360 degree Photosynth camera app picks up a rare update to version 1.7
6/17/2014 4:11:11 AM

Photosynth is Microsoft's proprietary photo app for taking 360 degree panoramas, and although it took a long time to arrive for Windows Phone 8, the app hasn't been updated in 14 months. Yes, time flies, but tonight version 1.7 has hit the Store in a rare treat for Windows Phone users.
Version 1.7, unfortunately, does not bring any new features though it does say 'bug fixes' for a changelog. Considering the multitudes of new devices and even a brand new operating systems (Windows Phone 8.1), it's not too surprising that Photosynth could use a little polishing.

Tomorrow, the engineering 'superstars' Juha Alakarhu and Eero Salmelin will be doing a live Ask Me Anything (AMA) on the Conversations blog, providing a unique opportunity to quiz the gurus on anything relating to mobile imaging.

Major Surface Pro 3 glitch fixed, but no release date yet.
6/16/2014 8:36:09 PM

With the Surface Pro 3 shipping by the end of the week, it looks like Microsoft engineers are readying some fixes that will improve the experience of using the tablet . Asking for user feedback, a digital artist suggests that the home button was too easily activated when in use and that there is a little bit of pen lag. Microsoft listened and it looks like fixes are incoming for both issues.

Words with Friends returns with a complete re-write for Windows Phone 8, goes for free
6/16/2014 7:34:13 PM

Back in 2009, Words with Friends was the big hit game from the startup company Zynga. The game finally arrived on Windows Phone 7 and 8 in 2012, plagued with bugs and performance issues. Indeed, it maintains an astonishingly low 1.8 stars (out of 5) on the Store from over 2,500 reviews. Needless to say, it's not a hit with Windows Phone users.
Words with Friends hadn't seen an update in quite some time, but fast forward today and it has a complete rewrite, losing its Windows Phone 7.x status and becoming a Window Phone 8 and 8.1 dedicated game.

Nokia brand names Lumia, ClearBlack, PureView, and others now belong to Microsoft
6/16/2014 5:44:49 PM
Though Microsoft's purchase of Nokia's Devices and Services division was announced late last year and completed in April, the fate of Nokia's trademark technology brands has still been unknown. Brand names like Lumia smartphones, ClearBlack displays and PureView camera technology have become synonymous with innovation and quality, much like the Nokia name itself.
And though the Nokia name will eventually be disappearing from the faces of Windows phones, it looks like some of the those mainstay Nokia brand names, along with a few surprising ones, will continue on with Microsoft.
